Singing the Father's Song
We know worship is more than just singing. Worship here is singing a song of love to Father, perhaps this is the highest form?. Eph 5:18-20. Drink deep huge draughts.(read the Message). We should look for any excuse for a song.
Richard Foster defn in his book on prayer. “Worship is our response to the overtures of love from the Father.” Zeph 3v17 happy song. “The LORD will take delight in you, and in his love he will give you new life. He will sing and be joyful over you”
Read John 4v11 Woman @ the well @ noon. John 4v42 teaches her about worship. Did she have father issues? Noon to get water because of shame? Jesus prophesies about her husbands and then teaches her about worship.
1. Develop a balanced view of worship
Dad is a king. King is a dad. The GK is Proscuneo to kiss towards and also to prostrate oneself. Fathers should have both Authority & affection. Brian Doerksen writes on worship that a good dad must have both.
“Intimate worship is our highest calling in this life and when we pass over it’s only going to get better.” Brian Doerksen
Intimacy is vital but Matt Redman writes “to worship face down is the ultimate sign of inner reverence”.
2. Don't neglect the fatherhood of God (Play the Fathers Song)
Father is often not mentioned in worship. Creative people need healing up set free from wounds of father and mother so they can break out with songs and creativity on the heart of the Father. Find those father songs and sing them, use them. Eg John Nuttall
2003 hit was Black Eyed Peas “Where is the Love: Father send us some guidance from above where is the love” We are the answer lets tell. Broadcast from the community of Gods family we should be singing here is the love.
“Fatherless worship is directed anywhere but to the Father. Songs often directed inwardly or to others. They miss the whole point of Jesus coming to lead us to the Father.” Brian Doerksen.
How is it for you? Is God a loving father you want to worship or someone you hate because he or your own father abandoned you? He wants to captivate us. Are there issues of unforgiveness you need to deal with?
3. Keep head & heart together.
In spirit & in truth what does that mean? In your spirit from deep within an appreciating what God is like. See John Piper. “heart and head emotions and thoughts” not sentimental or cerebral. Hymns & songs. Truth & emotion. See John Piper Desiring God. J. Edwards light in the head, warmth in the heart. Worship is emotional.
• Truth without emotion produces dead orthodoxy and a church full of artificial admirers
• Emotion without truth produces empty frenzy and cultivates shallow people who refuse the discipline of rigorous thought.
True worship comes from people who are deeply emotional and love the deep and sound doctrine, strong affections from God rooted in truth are the bone and marrow of biblical worship John Piper. We need truth songs and intimate songs!
The content of a song is vital. The truth a song communicates will lead us just as much as the tempo, rhythm and melody. Listen and understand its where we get most of our theology from.
4. Worship is a choice
Dad is looking for worshippers. Searching the earth for those who will worship him. He invites and woos us. The highest calling, will I enter into intimacy. This is an invitation to enter into embrace with, arms open wide? Do not choose on the basis of how good a song as an emotional choice but from the will on the basis of your obedience.
It is too easy to chase aesthetic experience for a praise induced ecstasy. A feeling. Addictive culture worship could be in love with good worship and feelings we get. True worship is a choice and highest worship is when we worship in the midst of great pain.
“Blessed be you name in the land which is plentiful …. Found in the desert place when darkness closes in still I will say blessed be your name” Matt Redman
Need to honour God not to worship, worship. In love with worship not God? eg. Blessed be your name. Love is a choice not a feeling. Love is choice not a feeling but when you make the choice then often the feeling comes.
Using our bodies is also a choice. Sometimes its hard but it deals with pride and the flesh if we abandon ourselves; like David did?
5. Maintain a Trinitarian focus
Worship father, son & spirit. Spirit & truth. Could mean in the spirit and him the truth. Trinitarian. The Spirit enables to join with Christ’s worship of the father” Robin Parry. Holy Spirit in Romans comes to help us in our weakness. In Christ before the Father.
Caught up in endless flow of love between Father son and spirit. “In heaven in worship” The ultimacy of intimacy. There are various types of songs:
i) substantially Trinitarian 3 person eg; “Father we love you”
ii) overt Trinitarian syntax; “Shine Jesus Shine”
iii) Trinitarian doxology; “Praise God from who all…”
iv) 2 and 1 person songs;
v) Son songs; “In Christ alone… what heights of love”
vi) Spirit songs; “consuming fire… there must we more, we wait for you”
vii) Father songs; “I have heard so many songs…”
Robin Parrys study of 28 Vineyard worship albums songs revealed: 1.4% 5 songs 3 person, 8.8 % 32 2 person songs, 38.7% 140 songs 1 person songs. Only 5.5 pc songs to the Father in survey of 28 vineyard albums, 31.8% Son songs 115, 1.4% only 5. The rest were you songs. So few songs to the Father. There is a profound fatherlessness in our worship. Lets sing the Fathers song.
David Ruis in Thailand, remote fathers seminar Rom 8:15 Spirit of adoption Daddy he says God no possible translation. Papa shout and wail from one lady led to everyone wailing. Now not God almighty but Papa. Fatherlessness.
“The most pressing issue in worship today is our relationship with God as father.” We need songs and arts to reflect the Fathers love eg Father painting by Cynthia based on Charlie Mackesy. We have good news let’s broadcast it in whatever ways we can. Get out you tap dancing shoes (story) ….. Release those things an explosion of creativity.
Conclusion
Worship in Spirit and Truth. Cultivate them both daily. Dwell in truth and spirit. Soak in his presence. Think and drink.
